2018 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2018 Honda CR-V

Serving Stamford, Norwalk, and Westport, CT

The best compact crossover SUVs offers a pleasing mix of spaciousness, versatility and features. Two segment leaders are the all-new 2018 VW Tiguan and the 2018 Honda CR-V. These two models offer efficient operation, smooth performance and a comfortable ride. However, a test-drive will quickly reveal that the Tiguan has superior handling, more space and better value.

The 2018 VW Tiguan is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine with 184 horsepower, 221 lb-ft of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Honda CR-V engine (in all but base trim) is a 2.4-liter I-4 with 184 horsepower, but only 180 lb-ft of torque, tied to an automatic CVT. Both models are available in front- or all-wheel drive versions. The 4Motion AWD Tiguan includes electronic differential locks and a mechanical center differential. This allows power to be allocated side to side, front to back. There is a total of eight driver-selectable modes.

The CR-V is a five-seat SUV, but the Tiguan is available with a third row to seat a total of seven. The VW is longer (185.1 vs 180.6 inches) and has a longer wheelbase (109.8 vs 104.7 inches). The top trim Tiguan sports 20-inch wheels compared to the 18-inches on the top CR-V model. The interior of the VW has more front head room (39.6 vs 37.8 inches), rear head room (38.9 vs 38.3 inches) and rear shoulder room (55.8 vs 55.6 inches). Tiguan also has a larger gas tank.

You might be interested to learn that Tiguan comes with a 6-year/72,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty, but CR-V is not as generous. Its basic warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles, and its powertrain is covered for 5 years/60,000 miles. The icing on the cake for the VW is the corrosion warranty of 7 years/100,000 miles, versus 5 years/unlimited miles on the CR-V.
