Serving Stamford, CT, Norwalk, and Darien

If you are in the market for a well-made, highly capable mid-size SUV, you will be very interested in the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg and the 2016 Honda Pilot. Both offer excellent reliability, high resale value and top-notch build quality. These two AWD vehicles come with plenty of standard features, including powerful engines and smooth automatic transmissions. However, when you dig deeper, you discover that the Touareg offers a higher level of luxury than the comparably priced Pilot, making it a better value and the best choice among the competitors in its class.

For 2016, the Volkswagen Touareg Lux and Executive trim levels now come with ventilated 14-way front seats. The Executive model also comes standard with a Driver Assist package and a power tilt steering wheel.

Both the 2016 Volkswagen Touareg VR6 Sport and the 2016 Honda Pilot Touring feature a V6 engine that delivers 280 horsepower. But the engine in the Volkswagen is a dual overhead cam design, while the Honda engine is only a single overhead cam model. Furthermore, the Touareg engine is larger (3.6 liters) than that of the Pilot (3.5 liters). The Volkswagen offers 4 extra lb-ft of torque, but also notice that the Touareg delivers full torque at only 2,500 rpm, versus 4,700 rpm for the Pilot. This can make quite a big difference when it comes to acceleration from a standing start, as well as increased smoothness and quiet. The Volkswagen automatic transmission come with Tiptronic and Sport Mode, not available on the Honda.

When it comes to wheelbase, the Volkswagen beats the Pilot, 113.9 inches to 111.0 inches. The Touareg also sits closer to the ground by 1.6 inches. The Volkswagen is a nimbler car, as witnessed by its turning diameter of 39.0 feet, compared to 39.4 feet for the Honda. Touareg can tow 7716 pounds, 2,716 more than the Pilot’s capacity – that’s almost a ton and half more towing capacity for the Volkswagen! In terms of fuel capacity, the Volkswagen can hold 26.4 gallons to the 19.5-gallon limit of the Honda. The Touareg offers more headroom and legroom. In fact, the Volkswagen has almost 5 more inches of rear legroom than does the Honda.

We’re not quite sure why, but the Honda Pilot offers only 5 years/60,000 miles of powertrain protection versus 10 years/100,000 miles warrantied by the Volkswagen Touareg. Furthermore, the Volkswagen comes standard with a corrosion/rust-through warranty that lasts 12 years. The Honda can muster only 5 years for their corrosion warranty.
