Compare 2023 VW Jetta vs 2022 Jetta Review

2023 VW Jetta vs 2022 VW Jetta

For 2023, the Volkswagen Jetta is continuing the refresh from the 2022 model. That year saw major styling tweaks including a revised grille and updated wheel designs, and for 2023 just a few new features join the ranks. Either way, the Jetta remains a quality compact sedan with enough punch and style to stand out from the pack, even with its sub-$25,000 price tag.

Performance

The 2023 Volkswagen Jetta gets the same powertrain as the previous 2022 model. That setup features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a choice between a six-speed manual transmission and eight-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift modes. The new Jetta model still makes 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and with the automatic transmission zero to 60 mph takes seven seconds.

Much like the previous model, the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta also offers impressive fuel economy. The EPA estimates 31 mpg city and 41 mpg highway for the automatic version, while the base six-speed manual dips slightly to 29 mpg city and 42 mpg on the open road. Upper trims with a manual transmission offer more features and therefore weight, dropping highway efficiency to 40 mpg rather than 42. No matter how you slice it, though, the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is an incredibly efficient way to get around Stamford, just like the 2022 version.

Appearance

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta saw a host of design updates, so the 2023 version sees no visual updates. For last year, the revised Jetta got a new grille with additional chrome trim, and a sleek lower grille to replace the downturned chin of the previous generation. In addition, LED headlights became standard across the complete Jetta lineup. New wheel designs debuted last year as well, and will carry over onto the 2023 versions of the model. And as it was a revision rather than a full update, the deep body creases and sharp lines remain clear identifiers of this Jetta generation.

Safety

Safety tech is a high priority for Volkswagen right now, and the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is proof positive. With features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and pedestrian detection as standard, every new model of the Jetta has the tech you need to be confident behind the wheel. Other features include lane keep assist and lane departure warning, while an HD rearview camera makes it easy to back out of tight spots with confidence.

Technology

Tech got a big boost in the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta, and those changes carry over into the new model year as well. The biggest change is the addition of remote start to the SE trim level for 2023, rather than only on the top-spec SEL trim in 2022. Otherwise, the package is the same across the board. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make connecting your smartphone a breeze, while a digital instrument cluster includes a widescreen map view to make navigation easier than ever. You'll also enjoy VW's other remote apps that allow you to start the engine, lock and unlock the doors, and close the windows and sunroof from your smartphone.
