New exterior and powertrain changes for 2024 in the VW Atlas
The VW Atlas is a mid-size crossover with a wide array of changes for 2024. The most visible upgrade is a new look with restyled front fascia along with new headlights. The new Atlas also adds a new full-length rear taillight that helps reduce the size of the rear compared with 2023. There's now a new available Atlas Peak Edition appearance package along with a more rugged exterior. New paint colors include Avocado Green and Pure Gray. The Atlas also offers new wheel designs across the entire lineup including R-Line models that feature 21-inch wheels.
Volkswagen has eliminated the previous 276-horsepower V6 engine and now offers the Atlas exclusively with a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that's good for 269 horsepower. Even with the difference in powertrains, the maximum towing capacity continues to be 5,000 pounds. What's more, front-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission are both still standard equipment, with all-wheel drive as an available option. The best fuel economy numbers have improved with 27 MPG on the highway for 2024 vs. 25 highway MPG for 2023.
New interior changes in the 2024 VW Atlas
The restyled version of the VW Atlas includes a cockpit that's sleeker and more contemporary, with new, more premium trim. There's now a more upscale, wod-look trim that surrounds the cockpit and extends back onto the rear doors. The shorter shifter in the new Atlas for 2024 helps open up the cabin compared to the 2023 edition and the center console includes a handy storage cubby underneath.
Seats are covered with a unique diamond-patterned stitching and a piano-black material is used extensively on the dashboard. Volkswagen is making a heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats standard equipment for 2024. Also new for the latest model year is a 12.0-inch infotainment screen that's a big step up from the 8.0-inch display in the 2023 model.
Changes in trim levels for 2024
Volkswagen has made a number of changes in its trim lineup for 2024. The entry-level SE and the SE with Technology trims remain the same but VW is adding a new Peak Edition SE with Technology model in the middle of the lineup. Above that, the 2024 VW Atlas will continue to offer the SL trim but adds a new Peak Edition SEL model as the next step up the ladder. Finally, the 2024 VW Atlas will continue to offer the SEL Premium R-Line as its top-end trim.
Changes in engine and performance options for 2024
In 2023, the VW Atlas offered both a 235-horsepower 4-cylinder and a V6 engine with 276 horsepower but both those engines have been discontinued. For 2024, Volkswagen has simplified things by offering a single more efficient engine: A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 269 horsepower along with 273 pound-feet of torque. The new powertrain delivers better throttle response and the retuned transmission gives the engine a more muscular feel. In fact, the 2024 VW Atlas can now reach 60 mph in 7.3 seconds which is faster than the retired V6 engine could achieve. Both the 2023 and 2024 models offer a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
A comparison of interiors
The 2024 and 2023 versions of the VW Atlas both give you three rows of seats and even the third row can welcome full-size adults, a rarity among three-row SUVs. Overall, the cabin has a family-friendly vibe and that's reflected in the generous amount of cupholders for both model years. It's worth noting that there's a noticeable upgrade in the quality of cabin materials for 2024 compared with the 2023 model.
