2017 Volkswagen Golf vs 2017 Mazda3

Serving Stamford, Norwalk, and Westport, CT

The 2017 Golf competes with many cars, including the 2017 Mazda3 hatchback. How do the two compare? Here’s a brief rundown of what you get at the base level. We think the Volkswagen comes out ahead in performance, spaciousness and entertainment. Here’s a comparison to help you decide for yourself.

Performance

How many horses are under the hood? In the VW’s case, there are 170. In the Mazda’s case, you’ll find 155. That’s fifteen extra horses in the VW. Torque has become increasingly important as automakers figure out how to balance performance with fuel economy. The VW turbo has 199 lb.ft. while the Mazda has 150 lb.ft. When you look at both figures together, it becomes plain that the 2017 Volkswagen Golf is definitely the better ride. Mazda does let you step up to a turbo for about $3,000 more than the base Golf edition. However, in their comparison, Car and Driver noted that the Volkswagen turbo achieves its maximum rate at 1,600 rpm while the Mazda can't get there until hits 3,250 rpm. Despite more horsepower, this makes the Mazda turbo slow to accelerate compared to the peppy VW turbo, according to the magazine.

Spaciousness

As the Car Connection writes, the Mazda3’s backseat is one of the tightest in the class. This means little legroom or headroom. The Golf, on the other hand, can seat four adults comfortably by comparison. Golf measurements show about half an inch more headroom than the Mazda3. Furthermore, there’s definitely a difference when it comes to cargo. The Mazda3 hold measures 20.2 cubic feet and expands to 47.1 cubic feet. Golf holds measure 22.8 cubes and expand to 52 cubes. When the seats are down, only the Golf is big enough to handle items like a bicycle. Golf's offer another advantage: a low lift-over height. This makes them easier to load.

Entertainment

Apple CarPlay set a new standard in car entertainment when it emerged just a few years ago. Android Auto set its own standard as it made more features available, such as Google maps. Which one you use depends on which phone system you have. Not every automaker is offering these two. Volkswagen has them as standards with its touch screen. Mazda doesn’t have them at all. What does that mean in terms of system usability? Smartphone owners can access most of their smartphone apps right on the touchscreen in their 2017 Volkswagen Golf. Since this includes navigational aids, it’s like having built-in GPS without extra costs.
