2018 VW Atlas vs VW Tiguan

Serving Stamford, Norwalk, and Westport, CT

In 2018, the Atlas and the Tiguan are at different points in their existence. The Tiguan celebrates 10 model years as Volkswagen’s compact crossover offering, while the Atlas makes its debut as the company’s full-size SUV—and, as of now, its largest vehicle. Both vehicles, however, provide some of the strengths that Volkswagen is known for: expert engineering, strong performance, and general premium quality.

Performance

As VW’s largest vehicle—and the company’s first three-row SUV—the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas has the ideal engine for enough muscle: a 3.6-liter V6 that provides 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque when fed with premium-grade fuel. Its max output, however, is measured at 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The engine is linked to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and like its smaller (and older) sibling, the Atlas can go with a front-wheel drivetrain or 4MOTION.

Available in four versions (i.e., S, Wolfsburg, Sport, and SEL), the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder (I4) engine with 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. With the engine tied to a 6-speed automatic transmission, and accompanied by the standard front-wheel drivetrain, the Tiguan achieves a fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. However, you can opt for 4MOTION, which is VW’s branded all-wheel drive system for enhancing traction ability.

Appearance

At the base level, the Tiguan comes with exterior features like roof rails, heated power side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, automatic halogen headlights with daytime running lights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The larger Atlas also starts off with roof rails and power side mirrors with integrated turn signals, but also includes a power tilting/sliding panoramic sunroof and LED headlights with LED daytime running lights (in place of halogen bulbs).

As part of the second production cycle, the 2018 VW Tiguan is the beneficiary of an exterior design that sports a more aggressive appearance than the first-generation iterations: with sharper lines that further emphasize sportiness. The new Atlas uses the same design language. Indeed, both vehicles are recipients of the Volkswagen Group MQB platform, which is designed for the company’s transverse, front-engined vehicles.

Safety

The 2017 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan has dual front impact airbags, which face the driver and front passenger; dual side impact airbags, which are mounted on the front seats; and dual side curtains that flank all rows. Also on each vehicle are a rollover sensor system, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, an electronic vehicle stability system that includes electronic differential lock, anti-slip regulation, brake assist, an intelligent crash response system, electronic brake-force distribution, and a brake override system. For security, the Atlas and the Tiguan have a theft-deterrent system that includes engine immobilization.
