2017 VW Jetta vs 2016 VW Jetta

Serving Stamford, Norwalk, and Westport, CT

The 2017 VW Jetta is picking up where the 2016 edition left off. In fact, Volkswagen is expanding the package. This means an even better value at every pricepoint. Whether your emphasis is on quality, performance, amenities or safety, the Jetta has your needs covered.

Performance

In 2016, VW dropped its lowest performer in favor of higher performance turbos. For 2017, Volkswagen continues these powertrain choices. Front wheel drive and a five-speed manual transmission are standards, while a six-speed automatic is also on tap. With a 1.4T, the turbo cranks out 150 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Drivers will appreciate 32 (automatic) mpg or 33 (manual) mpg combined fuel economy. Highway gas mileage is 39 or 40 mpg. If you prefer the 1.8T, you’ll command 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is 29 mpg combined, earning up to 37 mpg on the highway. Clearly you can’t go wrong with either engine choice.

Appearance

This generation of Jettas is bigger than ever. There’s more cabin space and more trunk space. In fact, it is bigger than many rival midsize cars. 2016 was also the first year that a touchscreen became a Jetta base edition standard. Among the additions in 2016, you’ll find Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You’ll also get these smartphone integration features on most 2017 editions. This year’s base model has picked up a rearview camera. Regardless of which 2017 Jetta you purchase, you’ll have a clear view during every reverse maneuver. Also new, a USB port has replaced the previous VW proprietary connection.

Reducing trim levels from six to four, there’s more available in every 2017 edition. The S edition has a touchscreen and Bluetooth audio streaming. SE editions have push button start and heated front seats. The leatherette interior is definitely dressier. HD radio and a bigger touchscreen are on the dash. Car-Net App-Connect services give you access to more music. SEL drivers enjoy navigation, a dual-zone programmable thermostat, and a power chair. A cooled glovebox is a VW feature that’s hard to find on any rival. While 2016 GLI editions were divided into two choices. VW is packing it all into one exciting edition. The exterior wears a special rear spoiler and a different grille. It has trim-specific cast-aluminum wheels, chrome exhaust tips and LED taillights. The interior has front sport seats. Other 2017 GLI standards include a nine-speaker Fender system and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Safety

In 2016, the Jetta earned the five-star safety designation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 2017 Jetta and Jetta GLI models also claim all five stars. As it did in 2016, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named it a 2017 Top Safety Pick Plus. Helping to make you even safer, SE editions add a blind spot monitor. SEL drivers benefit from a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Rain-sensing wipers and heated windshield wiper nozzles ensure better visibility with less driver stress. Adaptive cruise control regulates your speed to match traffic patterns.
