Design

If a refined interior space is high on your list, the Tiguan will probably get extra points. The materials are high-end, and the whole cabin exudes that sophistication we’ve come to expect from the German automaker. The placement of controls and instruments is a bit more intuitive and attractive inside the Tiguan than inside competing cabins. Your rear passengers will love you if you choose the Tiguan, with its reclining back seats. While the seats can be folded down in both vehicles, they only recline in the Tiguan. One more interior advantage held by the Tiguan: a cool flat-folding front passenger seat not offered in the CX-5. In the driver’s seat, you’ll find that you get a more panoramic view of the road with the Tiguan higher seat positioning.

Performance

The CX-5 and the Tiguan are solidly reliable, and will get you down the road for years to come, but you’ll have an entirely different driving experience in each one. Drivers who appreciate more refinement in their ride will gravitate toward the Tiguan, which has an arguably smoother and more comfortable ride. The CX-5 firmer suspension can feel stiff at times, according to reviewers. Those who desire some get-up-and-go from their daily driver may be disappointed with the CX-5 less-than-thrilling engine performance. Though it does get slightly better gas mileage than the Tiguan, you may be left wanting in terms of acceleration and overall power. The Tiguan motor boasts 200 horsepower to the CX-5 155 and 207 foot-pounds of torque compared to 150 from the CX-5. Even if you upgrade to the larger engine offered for the CX-5, you’ll have less horsepower and torque than the Tiguan.

Features

The Tiguan standard feature package is more generous than most in its class, the CX-5 included. The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with creature comforts like automatic headlights and rain-sensing automated wipers. Not so in the CX-5. Both the CX-5 and the Tiguan have infotainment systems with wireless connectivity for your devices. The Tiguan interface is arguably more intuitive and user-friendly. The CX-5 onboard system serves its purpose, too, albeit a bit less gracefully.
