Looking for a capable midsize sedan? Two popular choices are the 2016 Volkswagen Passat and Nissan Altima. Both offer good value and workmanship, and share the same overall length, 191.9 inches. But the two sedans offer radically different driving experiences. By checking out the differences between the two models and taking each for a test drive, you’ll have no doubt which one is the better choice.

Comparison Overview

The Volkswagen Passat is a Euro-design sport sedan that delivers the most enjoyable ride and handling in its class, whereas the Nissan Altima is only average on both scores. The 2016 Passat S delivers superior torque and interior space, greater fuel capacity, a longer wheelbase, and a real automatic 6-speed transmission rather than a CVT. The Volkswagen also provides more in the way of passenger space, trunk space, vehicle width, shoulder room, rear head room and rear leg room. In addition, standard on the Passat but not on the Altima are a turbocharged engine, direct fuel injection, cruise control and alloy wheels.

2016 VW Passat vs Nissan Altima Interior

2016 Volkswagen Passat Highlights

The Passat provides excellent handling and ride characteristics in a midsize package. The 2016 edition of the Volkswagen Passat has been freshened with revised exterior styling front and aft, featuring a more muscular grille, slimmer headlights, all-new front and rear bumpers, as well as new front fenders, trunk lid and sculpted hood. For the first time in a Volkswagen sedan, you can get LED taillights and headlights. A sporty new Passat R joins the lineup in 2016.

The interior has been upgraded and receives a bevy of new technology. The rear row of the Passat has limo-like legroom measuring 39.1 inches. The interior now features two sizes of touchscreens that react to swipe motions, as well as the MIIB II infotainment system. The convenient rear seating uses a folding 60/40-split design. The base model includes a six-speaker stereo, A/C, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic on/off headlights, six-way adjustable front seats, a six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and one year/10,000 miles of no-cost scheduled maintenance. Higher trim levels add power adjustments to the driver’s seat, rear-seat air vents, larger wheels, leather seats, moonroof, radar-based cruise control and semi-automatic parallel parking. Passat also offers the Driver Assistance System, now with Lane Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Traffic Alert with Braking, keyless entry, Volkswagen Car-Net with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, pushbutton start and keyless entry. You can open the trunk by waving your foot beneath the rear bumper, freeing your hands to hold groceries and packages.
