What's New for the 2017 VW Jetta?

For the 2017 model year, the Jetta, the compact car offering from Volkswagen (VW), has no major changes from the previous years—apart from the rearview camera now being standard on all trims. The variants available on the Jetta still remain the S, SE, Sport, SEL, and GLI.

Powering the S and SE trims of the 2017 VW Jetta is a 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged inline four-cylinder (I4) engine that generates 150 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque. The Sport and SEL get a 1.8-liter turbocharged I4 that generates 170 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque. The GLI stands alone with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 with 210 horsepower and 207 foot-pounds of torque. The Jetta engine is paired with a five-speed manual, six-speed automatic, or six-speed manual transmission depending on the trim; notably, the GLI is the only one with a six-speed manual to emphasize its performance orientation. The standard drivetrain on the new Jetta is front-wheel drive, although you can go with VW’s 4MOTION four-wheel drivetrain instead for improved traction. Fuel economy, based on powertrain and drivetrain configuration, can peak at 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Inside the car, which is large enough to accommodate up to five people, the 2017 Jetta comes with front-seat heating capability (if you choose the SE) and leather upholstery (if you choose the Sport or higher). Standard on the compact vehicle are comfort and convenience features like cruise control, remote keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted controls, and a four-speaker touchscreen infotainment system that includes Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming. On the SE, VW adds push-button engine start, and the infotainment center is upgraded with HD Radio, voice control, and an SD memory car reader. The Sport has a six-speaker sound system and navigation capability, and the SEL had added dual-zone climate control. Unique to the GLI is an 8-speaker Fender Premium Audio System, as well as a remote garage-door opener. For crash-event safety, the 2017 VW Jetta comes with a pair of front impact airbags that face the driver and front passenger, a pair of front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and a pair of side curtain airbags that flank both rows of seats. Also on the vehicle are the aforementioned rearview camera, engine and hydraulic brake assist, a brake override system, an intelligence crash response system, anti-lock disc brakes, an anti-theft alarm system with engine immobilization ability, and electronic stability and traction control. A blind spot monitor is added on the SE, and autonomous emergency braking is added on the SEL.
